Memorandum of Understanding with British Divers Marine Life Rescue

The UK Civil Air Patrol has provided assistance and support to British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) in a range of tasks over the years. These have included undertaking airborne searches for marine animals in distress, guiding ground/sea based resources to where assistance is required and even transferring animals to emergency rescue centres by air. The need for a more rapid response on occasions, as evidenced by a number of recent searches, has now led both charities to develop and sign-off a formal “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) to strengthen this relationship still further.

The MOU document outlines the nature of the UKCAPS resource available to BDMLR; formalises procedures for how BDMLR can call upon airborne assistance from the UKCAP; and presents simplistic means of air-ground communication to be used between UKCAPS aircraft and BDMLR resources if electronic communication by telephone or radio is unavailable for whatever reason.

The MoU will initially be tested and developed in Scotland before being implemented across the UK.
